Learning Objective

Students will be able to solve quadratic equations by factorising and applying the zero-product property, identify both solutions, and explain why a quadratic can have two solutions.

Lesson Overview

Students discover the zero-product property through a launch investigation, then thin-slice from identifying factor pairs through solving fully factored quadratics, monic trinomials, and non-monic equations in real-world contexts. Three driving inquiry questions anchor every phase.

Materials

  • Vertical whiteboards or large chart paper
  • Dry-erase markers (multiple colours)
  • Erasers / cloths
  • Random grouping cards
  • Exit slip half-sheets (printed)
  • Consolidation note sheets (printed, one per student)

Scaffolded Task Progression

1Task 1
The zero-product property says: if , then or (or both). Use it to find ALL values of that make each equation true:
a) b) c) d) e)
2Task 2
Anchored Inquiry Questions — post these for your group to discuss as you work: 1. What is the zero-product property? 2. How do you solve quadratic equations by factorisation? 3. Why does a quadratic equation potentially have two solutions? Now solve these. The equation is already factored — but first, get it equal to zero if it isn't already:
a) b) c) d) e)
