Learning Objective

Students will analyze multiple climate-controlling factors (latitude, ocean proximity, elevation, ocean currents, and topography) to classify regional climate belts and apply this understanding to real-world agricultural and urban planning scenarios, with flexible entry points and expression modalities to support all learners.

Lesson Overview

Students investigate why latitude alone cannot explain Earth's diverse climates by exploring how ocean proximity, elevation, ocean currents, and topography interact to create regional climate belts — with direct connections to crop planning and urban heat island mitigation.

Materials

  • Printed or digital biome photo card sets (32 cards — 8 biome types × 4 images each)
  • World map with latitude lines printed or projected
  • Climate data comparison table (coastal vs. inland cities, provided in warm-up)
  • Colored pencils or markers (for climate zone mapping)
  • Climate factor sorting mats (laminated or printed)
  • Graph paper or digital graphing tool for temperature/precipitation bar graphs
  • Sticky notes (two colors) for misconception-flag activity
  • Printed Four-Quadrant note sheets
  • Optional: physical globe for 3-D reference
  • Optional: sand tray and spray bottle for rain shadow demonstration
  • Tablet/laptop access for students using digital tools

Climate Factor Anchor Chart — Fill-In Graphic Organizer

Your teacher will introduce five major factors that control a region's climate. As each factor is explained, complete the graphic organizer below. A word bank is provided.

Biome Photo Card Sort — Classifying Climate Zones

Your mission: Your group has a set of 32 biome photo cards. Sort them into the six climate zone categories listed on your sorting mat.

Climate Zone Sorting Mat Categories:
- Tropical (hot and wet year-round)
- Dry/Arid (very little precipitation, extreme temperatures)
- Temperate (mild temperatures, moderate precipitation)
- Continental (cold winters, warm summers, variable precipitation)
- Polar/Tundra (extremely cold, very little precipitation)
- Highland/Mountain (cold due to elevation, vegetation changes with altitude)

How to sort: Look at the vegetation in each photo. Ask yourself:
- What kinds of plants are visible? (tall trees, shrubs, grasses, bare rock, ice)
- Does the landscape look wet or dry?
- Does it look hot, mild, or cold?

Choose your role:
- Sorter: Physically places each card in a category
- Recorder: Writes down the group's reasoning for 3 cards your group debated most
- Challenger: After sorting, picks 2 cards and asks 'Could this card fit in a different zone? Why or why not?'

Connection to real life: After sorting, your teacher will ask: *Which climate zones would be best for growing wheat? Coffee? Citrus fruits?*
