Lesson Overview
Students investigate how a star's apparent brightness depends on its distance from Earth, discovering that a star looking bright does not necessarily mean it is the biggest or closest star. They connect this to real astronomical navigation and stellar distance measurement.
Materials
- 3 identical flashlights (or small LED lights) per group
- Meter sticks or measuring tape
- Darkened area of classroom or hallway
- Star Cards (printed card set — see cardSets)
- Light meter app on teacher tablet (or printed lux data cards)
- Student science notebooks
- Pencils and colored pencils
- Printed Four-Quadrant note sheet (one per student)
- Exit slip slips (half-sheet)
