What's the Story Behind the Number? Populations, Samples, Parameters, and Data Types

Students will be able to identify the population, sample, variable of interest, and data type in a statistical study, distinguish between a parameter and a sample statistic, and differentiate descriptive statistics from inferential statistics.
Lesson Overview
Students move from identifying everyday data as qualitative or quantitative, to distinguishing populations from samples, to classifying numerical values as parameters or statistics, to connecting descriptive and inferential thinking — all grounded in real-world contexts like gas prices, MLB salaries, and sleep studies.
Materials
- Vertical whiteboards or chart paper
- Dry-erase markers (multiple colors)
- Random grouping cards or tool
- Four-quadrant note-taking template (half-sheet or notebook)
- Sticky notes (optional, for launch)
