Learning Objective

Students will read analog clocks to the nearest minute and solve real-world elapsed time word problems involving addition and subtraction of time intervals in minutes, using open number line models to bridge across the hour mark.

Lesson Overview

Students work in random groups of 3 at vertical non-permanent surfaces, progressing from reading analog clocks to the nearest 5 minutes, then to the nearest minute, and finally solving elapsed time word problems set in a flight and train departure scheduling context using open number lines.

Materials

  • Vertical whiteboards or chart paper (one per group of 3)
  • Dry-erase markers (multiple colors per group)
  • Erasers or socks
  • Random grouping cards or sticks
  • Printed clock face reference cards (one per group)
  • Printed open number line strips (blank, for reference)
