Track Timing: Decimals as Fractions on the Hundredths Grid
Shared by A STEM Educator
Students will express fractions with denominators of 10 or 100 as decimals, convert between fraction and decimal notation, and compare decimals to the hundredths place using visual models and comparison symbols.
Lesson Overview
Students move through a thin-sliced progression converting fractions with denominators of 10 and 100 to decimals, then comparing and adding decimals in the context of athletics timing and distance. Groups of 3 work at vertical non-permanent surfaces (VNPS), shading 10×10 grids and debating place-value alignment.
Materials
- Vertical whiteboards or large chart paper mounted on walls
- Dry-erase markers (multiple colors per group)
- Random grouping cards or sticks
- Printed 10×10 base-ten grid reference cards (one per group)
- Student consolidation note sheets (printed)
- Exit slip half-sheets
Scaffolded Task Progression
On your whiteboard, draw a grid. Shade the grid to show .
Then write as a decimal.

Hint: Each full row of the grid = . How many rows do you shade?
On your whiteboard grid, shade . Then write it as a decimal.
Hint: This time, count individual small squares — not whole rows.
