Students will solve two-step word problems within involving addition and subtraction by identifying the hidden intermediate quantity, representing each step with a tape diagram, and writing a two-step equation chain.

Lesson Overview

Students work in random groups at vertical surfaces to discover that some word problems hide a secret middle step. Tasks thin-slice from simple one-step warm-ups through Add-Then-Add, Add-Then-Subtract, Subtract-Then-Add, and comparison structures, culminating in reverse-engineering a story from two tape diagrams.

Materials

  • Vertical whiteboards or large chart paper taped to walls
  • Dry-erase markers (one per group)
  • Erasers or paper towels
  • Random grouping cards or name sticks
  • Printed Four-Quadrant note-taking half-sheets (one per student)
  • Projector or document camera for consolidation
