Learning Objective

Students will model partitive and quotitive division with small dividends, connect a division equation to its related multiplication fact, and write original story contexts that distinguish 'How many in each group?' from 'How many groups?'

Lesson Overview

Students explore a space-station narrative to discover that division means two distinct things — equal sharing (partitive) and equal grouping (quotitive) — then connect both to the inverse relationship with multiplication. Groups work at vertical whiteboards through five thin-sliced tasks that build from concrete dealing-out to abstract story creation.

Materials

  • Vertical whiteboards or large chart paper (one per group)
  • Dry-erase markers (one per group, passed between members)
  • Erasers or socks
  • Random grouping cards (pre-made)
  • Counters or sticky dots (optional manipulative)
  • Printed Four-Quadrant Note Sheets (one per student)
  • Exit slip half-sheets

Scaffolded Task Progression

1Task 1
SLICE 1 — Equal Sharing (Partitive): The space station has 12 food packets. There are 3 crew members. Each crew member gets the SAME number of packets. How many packets does each crew member get? Draw a picture showing how you dealt them out one by one. Write the division equation.
2Task 2
SLICE 2 — Equal Grouping (Quotitive): The space station STILL has 12 food packets. Now the crew needs to pack them into storage pods. Each pod holds exactly 4 packets. How many pods will be completely filled? Draw a picture showing how you chunked them into groups of 4. Write the division equation.
