Learning Objective
Students will divide unit fractions by whole numbers and whole numbers by unit fractions using tape diagrams and the relationship between multiplication and division.
Lesson Overview
Students explore division of unit fractions and whole numbers through a real-world context of portioning granola bars and craft ribbon. The 3-Act structure moves from estimation to precise tape-diagram reasoning.
Materials
- Paper (for folding strips into fourths/eighths)
- Pencil
- Whiteboard and markers
Scaffolded Task Progression
1Task 1
A teacher has 3 granola bars and wants to give each student a 1/4-bar serving. Without calculating, write down:(a) a number of servings that is definitely TOO LOW,(b) a number that is definitely TOO HIGH, and(c) your best guess. Explain your reasoning in one sentence.
2Task 2
Draw a tape diagram to show how many 1/4-size servings are in 1 whole granola bar. Label each section. Write a division equation and a multiplication equation that match your diagram.
