Shape Architects: Classifying 2D Figures in a Hierarchy
Shared by A STEM Educator
Students will classify two-dimensional figures in a hierarchy based on their properties, recognizing that attributes of a broader category belong to all shapes within that category (CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.G.B.3, CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.G.B.4).
Lesson Overview
Students discover how quadrilaterals nest inside one another by exploring shared properties, building from naming basic shapes to constructing a full Euler diagram that shows how squares, rectangles, rhombuses, and parallelograms relate. Real-world architecture and graphic design framing grounds each task.
Materials
- Vertical whiteboards or large chart paper
- Dry-erase markers (multiple colors)
- Pencils and blank paper
- Random grouping tool (e.g., card draw, counting off)
Scaffolded Task Progression
(a) how many pairs of parallel sides it has, and(b) whether it has any right angles. Use shapes you might actually see in a building: a door frame, a tilted window pane, a diamond tile, a slanted wall section.
