8th GradeBTC Style / Thinking ClassroomsUse the structure of an expression to write it in multiple ways.50 min
Learning Objective

Students will identify, name, and apply the addition properties (identity, inverse), multiplicative identity, multiplicative inverse, multiplicative property of zero, associative property, and commutative property to rewrite expressions in equivalent forms and evaluate efficiently.

Lesson Overview

Students progress from identifying named properties in simple numeric expressions to strategically applying multiple properties to rewrite and evaluate algebraic expressions, building flexibility in how they see and manipulate structure.

Materials

  • Vertical whiteboards or large paper on desks
  • Dry-erase markers (one per student)
  • Pencils and notebook paper for notes
