Learning Objective

Students will be able to construct and interpret bar charts, pie charts, and histograms for both discrete and continuous data presented in frequency tables and grouped frequency tables.

Lesson Overview

Students progress from reading simple bar charts through constructing pie charts and histograms for grouped continuous data, developing fluency in choosing and interpreting appropriate representations for discrete and continuous data.

Materials

  • Whiteboard and dry-erase markers
  • Pencil and paper
  • Basic calculator or phone calculator
  • Ruler (one per student)

Scaffolded Task Progression

1Task 1
The table shows the favourite colours of 20 students.

Is this data discrete or continuous? Write one sentence to explain your answer.
2Task 2
Using the same colour data from Task 1, read the bar chart below and answer: which colour has the highest frequency, and what is the difference between the most and least popular colours?

3Task 3
A survey asks 24 students how they travel to school. The results are: Walk — 9, Bus — 7, Car — 5, Cycle — 3.

On your whiteboard, draw a fully labelled bar chart for this data. Include: a title, labelled axes, and an even scale on the frequency axis.
