Learning Objective

Students will solve radical equations and equations with rational exponents by applying inverse power operations, verify solutions algebraically, and explain geometrically why extraneous solutions arise.

Lesson Overview

Students progress from converting between radical and rational exponent notation to solving multi-step radical equations, culminating in a graphical investigation of why extraneous solutions appear. Each task changes exactly one variable at a time.

Materials

  • Vertical whiteboards or large paper on wall
  • Dry-erase markers (one per group)
  • Pencils and scratch paper
  • Phone or basic calculator for graphing verification

Scaffolded Task Progression

1Task 1
