Learning Objective

Students will read, write, and compare whole numbers up to the billions place using standard form, word form, and expanded form, and apply place value understanding to reason about the relative size of large numbers.

Lesson Overview

Students progress from identifying place values in millions to reading, writing, comparing, and reasoning about numbers into the billions through a carefully scaffolded thin-slice sequence on vertical whiteboards.

Materials

  • Vertical whiteboards or large chart paper taped to walls
  • Dry-erase markers (multiple colors per group)
  • Erasers or paper towels
  • Printed place value reference strips (ones through billions) — one per group
  • Random grouping cards
  • Rulers (for drawing place value charts on the board)

Scaffolded Task Progression

1Task 1
Here is a place value chart filled in for you.

What is the value of the digit ? What is the value of the digit ? What is the value of the digit ?
2Task 2
The number is shown in the chart above. Now write this number in word form — the way you would say it out loud to someone. Use the period names (billions, millions, thousands) to help you.
