Learning Objective

Students will divide dividends up to 4 digits by 1-digit divisors using area models and partial quotients, and will interpret remainders contextually to make real-world decisions about rounding up, dropping, or expressing the remainder as a fraction.

Lesson Overview

Students progress from dividing 2-digit dividends by 1-digit divisors using partial quotients and area models, up to dividing 4-digit dividends with remainders and making contextual decisions about how to interpret those remainders in a fleet logistics scenario.

Materials

  • Vertical whiteboards or large chart paper (one per group of 3)
  • Dry-erase markers (multiple colors per group)
  • Erasers or paper towels
  • Random grouping cards
  • Printed consolidation note sheets (one per student)
  • Pencils
