Students will skip-count forward and backward by 5s, 10s, and 100s starting from any 2- or 3-digit number, correctly crossing place-value boundaries (e.g., 293 → 303 → 313), and explain what changes and what stays the same in each place-value position.
Lesson Overview
Students work in random groups at vertical whiteboards to discover that skip-counting by 5s, 10s, and 100s works from ANY starting number — not just 'clean' multiples — and that crossing place-value boundaries (century lines) follows the same pattern. Tasks thin-slice from counting by 10s on benchmark numbers to backwards counting and error detection across hundreds.
Materials
- Vertical whiteboards or large chart paper taped to walls
- Dry-erase markers (1 per group)
- Eraser or sock per group
- Random grouping cards or sticks
- Printed or projected thin-slice task cards
- Student math journals for consolidation notes
