Students will convert larger units to smaller units within the customary and metric systems using multiplication, and solve multi-step measurement word problems involving distance, mass, and liquid volume.
Lesson Overview
Students work in random groups of 3 at vertical non-permanent surfaces (VNPS) to discover and apply unit conversion patterns — starting from reading a conversion table and multiplying whole numbers, then building toward multi-step measurement word problems involving distance, mass, and volume in a wildlife habitat restoration context.
Materials
- Vertical whiteboards or large chart paper taped to walls
- Dry-erase markers (one per group member)
- Erasers or socks
- Random grouping cards or sticks
- Printed conversion reference table (one per group, posted at board)
- Student note sheets (Four-Quadrant Consolidation Notes, one per student)
