Learning Objective

Students will be able to add two fractions with unlike denominators by finding a common denominator, rewriting equivalent fractions, and simplifying the result in real-world cooking contexts.

Lesson Overview

Students progress from adding fractions with related denominators (one is a multiple of the other) through adding fractions requiring a common denominator, culminating in multi-step fraction addition in a cooking context. Each task changes only one variable to build confidence and conceptual understanding.

Materials

  • Vertical whiteboards or chart paper
