Learning Objective
Students will multiply fractions and mixed numbers by representing products as area models and applying the standard algorithm, interpreting results in the context of garden bed dimensions.
Lesson Overview
Students use a real-world garden bed planning scenario to discover how to multiply fractions and mixed numbers, building understanding through area models and scaled diagrams before connecting to the standard algorithm.
Materials
- Paper (plain or notebook)
- Pencils
- Whiteboard and markers
Scaffolded Task Progression
1Task 1
Warm-up: Shade 1/2 of a paper square. Then fold the shaded half in half. What fraction of the whole paper is one of the new smaller sections? Write a multiplication sentence to describe what you did.
2Task 2
Look at the garden blueprint. Without any numbers, estimate what fraction of the whole garden is the shaded vegetable section. Record: too low / too high / best guess. Explain your reasoning.
