Year 10 (KS4)BTC Style / Thinking Classrooms50 min
Learning Objective

Students will classify discrete and continuous data, organise raw data into frequency and grouped frequency tables, and represent data accurately using bar charts and histograms (equal class widths, no frequency density).

Lesson Overview

Students progress from classifying data types and completing frequency tables through to constructing and interpreting bar charts and histograms for both discrete and continuous data, building one skill at a time.

Materials

  • Vertical whiteboards or large paper
  • Dry-erase markers (at least 2 colours per group)
  • Pencil and paper for each student

Scaffolded Task Progression

1Task 1
Look at these six data types. Decide: is each one discrete or continuous?

1. Number of goals scored in a match
2. Time taken to run 100 m
3. Shoe size (UK whole sizes)
4. Mass of a parcel in kg
5. Number of books on a shelf
6. Temperature in °C

Write D or C next to each one and give a one-word reason.
2Task 2
Same six data types. Now sort them into a two-column table with headers 'Discrete' and 'Continuous'. Then add ONE more example of your own to each column.
3Task 3
Here are the scores (out of 10) for 15 students in a quiz:

7, 5, 8, 6, 7, 9, 5, 7, 6, 8, 7, 10, 6, 5, 8

Complete this frequency table:
