Learning Objective

Students will be able to identify equal parts of a whole, name unit and non-unit fractions using standard notation, and explain what the numerator and denominator represent in a real-world context.

Lesson Overview

Students progress from identifying equal vs. unequal parts through naming unit fractions, then non-unit fractions, using area models. Each task changes exactly one variable to build deep conceptual understanding of what a fraction means.

Materials

  • Vertical whiteboards or chart paper
  • Dry-erase markers (multiple colors)
  • Random grouping tool
  • Fraction task cards (printed)
  • Sticky notes for riddle words
