Learning Objective

Students will understand that a percent is a ratio comparing a quantity to 100, represent percents on 10×10 grids, convert between fractions, decimals, and percents, and apply percent reasoning to real-world discount and battery scenarios.

Lesson Overview

Students explore percentages as ratios out of 100 through real-world store discounts and battery charge indicators, building from shading 10×10 grids to analyzing competing retail promotions.

Materials

  • Paper and pencils
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Phone or basic calculator (optional)

Scaffolded Task Progression

1Task 1
Look at the two store signs and the phone battery. Without calculating anything, rank these three percent values from least to greatest: 8%, 25%, 30%. Then estimate: if the headphones cost 80 dollars, which store saves you more money?
2Task 2
Draw a 10×10 grid (100 squares). Shade the grid to show each value, then write the matching fraction and decimal:
(a) 30%,(b) 25%,(c) 8%.
