Blueprint Geometry: Lines, Angles, and Symmetry in Structural Design

Learning Objective

Students will identify and draw points, lines, line segments, rays, right/acute/obtuse angles, perpendicular and parallel lines within 2D figures (triangles and quadrilaterals), and recognize and draw all lines of symmetry in two-dimensional figures.

Lesson Overview

Students work in random groups of 3 at vertical non-permanent surfaces (VNPS), progressing from identifying basic geometric vocabulary on structural blueprints to classifying 2D figures by angle types, parallel/perpendicular lines, and drawing all lines of symmetry. Tasks change only one variable at a time, building from floor to ceiling.

Materials

  • Vertical whiteboards or large chart paper taped to walls
  • Dry-erase markers (multiple colors per group)
  • Erasers or paper towels
  • Square corner reference card (index card) for each group
  • Printed anchor vocabulary card (point, line, segment, ray) per group
  • Ruler per group
  • Random grouping cards or sticks

Scaffolded Task Progression

1Task 1
A blueprint always starts with basic marks. On your whiteboard, draw and LABEL each of these four geometric figures:

1. A point (label it )
2. A line through two points (label the points and , write 'Line ')
3. A line segment with two endpoints (label endpoints and , write 'Segment ')
4. A ray starting at point going through point (label it 'Ray ')

For each one, write ONE sentence describing how it is different from the others.
2Task 2
A structural engineer is checking the corners on a blueprint truss. Use your index card (square corner) to test each angle below.
