Learning Objective

Students will classify benchmark angles, accurately measure angles in whole-number degrees using a protractor, and solve additive angle problems by decomposing or composing adjacent angles.

Lesson Overview

Students progress from identifying benchmark angles by sight to precisely measuring angles with a protractor and finally solving additive angle problems — all framed through solar panel tilt and roof truss alignment for sustainable buildings. Groups of 3 work at vertical non-permanent surfaces (VNPS) throughout.

Materials

  • Vertical whiteboards or large chart paper taped to walls
  • Dry-erase markers (multiple colors per group)
  • Erasers or paper towels
  • Printed protractor reference cards (one per group)
  • Random grouping cards or sticks
  • Printed task cards (teacher posts or projects each task)
  • Four-Quadrant consolidation note sheets (one per student)

Scaffolded Task Progression

1Task 1
A solar panel engineer marks three roof angles on a blueprint. Look at each angle below and classify it as acute, right, obtuse, or straight. Use and as your reference benchmarks. [ Interactive graph / diagram — available in the full lesson ] For each angle:(a) classify it, and(b) explain HOW you know using or as your reference.
2Task 2
A roof truss designer says: 'An angle is formed wherever two rays share a common endpoint (vertex).'

Below are four figures. Circle ONLY the ones that show a true angle. For each one you circle, label the vertex and both rays.
