7 and 8BTC Style / Thinking ClassroomsSub-Unit 1, Lesson 140 min
Learning Objective

Students will perform translations of two-dimensional figures on and off a coordinate grid, describe translations using coordinate rules and vectors, and verify that translated figures are congruent to the original.

Lesson Overview

Students progress from identifying translations on a coordinate grid to describing and performing translations using algebraic notation, culminating in translating figures off the grid using vector notation.

Materials

  • Vertical whiteboards or large chart paper
  • Dry-erase markers (multiple colors)
  • Pencils and paper for note-taking

Scaffolded Task Progression

1Task 1
Triangle has vertices , , . Plot it on the grid. Then slide the entire triangle 4 units to the right. Plot the new triangle and label its vertices A', B', C'. Write the new coordinates.
