7-2-11 Connecting Descriptions, Tables, Graphs, and Equations
Shared by A STEM Educator★ Featured Teacher · rated 90+ in our quality review
Students will connect verbal descriptions, tables, graphs, and equations of proportional relationships, identifying the constant of proportionality across all representations.
Lesson Overview
Students progress from identifying proportional relationships in tables to connecting all four representations — description, table, graph, and equation — through collaborative vertical work. Each task changes only one variable in complexity, building toward creating and translating between all four forms.
Materials
- Vertical whiteboards or large chart paper
- Dry-erase markers (multiple colors)
- Pencils and notebook paper
Scaffolded Task Progression
| Time (min) | Water (oz) |
|---|---|
| 1 | 3 |
| 2 | 6 |
| 3 | 9 |
| 4 | 12 |
1. Is this a proportional relationship? How do you know?
2. What is the constant of proportionality? What does it mean here?
1. Write an equation relating Water () to Time ().
2. Use your equation to find how much water drips in 7 minutes.
3. Use your equation to find how long it takes to collect 33 oz.
