Students will read, write, and compare multi-digit whole numbers up to 1,000,000 using place-value understanding, identify ten-times relationships between adjacent places, and round any multi-digit number to a specified place value.
Lesson Overview
Students progress from reading and writing 5-digit numbers in expanded form through comparing multi-digit numbers to rounding 6-digit numbers to any place value, using stadium seating contexts at vertical whiteboards in random groups of 3.
Materials
- Vertical whiteboards or large chart paper taped to walls
- Dry-erase markers (multiple colors per group)
- Erasers or socks
- Random grouping cards (pre-made)
- Printed place-value chart reference (one per student)
- Printed open number line templates (optional backup)
