Learning Objective

Students will write, solve, and interpret linear inequalities in one variable to model real-world constraints, including cases requiring reversal of the inequality symbol.

Lesson Overview

Students move from interpreting simple inequality situations to writing, solving, and graphing multi-step linear inequalities in real-world contexts, building one layer of complexity at a time on vertical surfaces.

Materials

  • Vertical whiteboards or large chart paper
  • Dry-erase markers (multiple colors)
  • Erasers or paper towels
  • Random grouping cards or app
  • Printed number line strips (optional)
  • Four-Quadrant consolidation note sheet (one per student)

Scaffolded Task Progression

1Task 1
Is each value a solution to ? Test each one and mark YES or NO on your board.
a) b) c) d) Then graph the solution set on a number line.
2Task 2
Is each value a solution to ? Test each one and mark YES or NO on your board.

1. Check whether is a solution.
2. Check whether is a solution.
3. Check whether is a solution.
4. Check whether is a solution.
5. Graph the solution set on a number line.
3Task 3
A skate park charges 3 dollars per visit. You have at most 18 dollars to spend. Write and solve an inequality to find how many visits you can make. Graph your solution.
