Life Cycles: From Seeds to Bees — Plants, Animals, and Our Pollinator Garden
Shared by A STEM Educator
Students will identify and sequence the four universal stages of a life cycle (birth, growth, reproduction, death) for at least two organisms (a flowering plant and an animal), compare complete metamorphosis to direct development, and explain why the reproduction stage is critical for pollinator gardens and agricultural crops.
Lesson Overview
Students explore the universal stages of life cycles (birth, growth, reproduction, death) across plants and animals, connecting to real-world pollinator garden management and crop timing. Students sort life stage cards, build comparative models, and investigate how disrupting reproduction affects populations.
Materials
- Printed life stage cards (frog, butterfly, flowering plant — 1 set per pair)
- Printed photos: mealworm beetle (larva, pupa, adult) and sunflower (seed, seedling, flower, seed head)
- Large sorting mats (4 columns: Birth, Growth, Reproduction, Death) — 1 per group
- Comparative matrix worksheet (blank 2-column table)
- Crayons or colored pencils
- Sticky notes (2 colors)
- Anchor chart paper and markers
- Optional: real sunflower seeds and a dried bean seed for tactile engagement
- Pollinator garden scenario cards (1 per group for Elaborate phase)
- Exit slip half-sheets (pre-printed)
Scaffolded Task Progression
(A) Reproduction(B) Birth(C) Death(D) Growth. Then write one sentence explaining your choice. [ Interactive graph / diagram — available in the full lesson ]
1. Which stage appears in ALL THREE organisms?
2. Which organism's growth stage looks MOST different from its adult form?
3. In our pollinator garden, bees visit flowers to collect nectar. Which life cycle stage of the plant are bees helping with? Explain.
