Field Scientists & the Recipe for Metamorphosis: Life Cycles of a Butterfly

Students will develop models to describe the unique and diverse life cycle of a butterfly (egg → larva → pupa → adult), identifying the role of each stage and explaining how the cycle repeats, in alignment with NGSS 3-LS1-1.
Lesson Overview
Students become 'field scientists' keeping a research journal as they investigate the four stages of a butterfly's life cycle through observation, modeling, and the metaphor of a step-by-step recipe for metamorphosis. Each task unlocks the next stage of the butterfly's story.
Materials
- Field Scientist Research Journals (folded construction paper booklets, 1 per student)
- Pencils and colored pencils
- Printed 'Recipe for Metamorphosis' cards (4 stages, 1 set per group)
- Plastic sorting trays
- Butterfly life cycle sequencing picture cards (laminated)
- Play dough (4 colors: green, yellow, brown, orange)
- Craft sticks and pipe cleaners
- Magnifying glasses
- Printed images of monarch butterfly at each life stage
- Anchor chart paper and markers
- Exit slip half-sheets (pre-printed)
- Optional: real caterpillar or chrysalis in observation container
Scaffolded Task Progression
You are a field scientist who just found a tiny green egg on a milkweed leaf. In your Research Journal, draw what you PREDICT will happen next. Then answer: 'What ingredients do you think a butterfly needs to grow up?' List at least 2 ideas.
(Teacher opens the Recipe Box and reveals Envelope 1, which contains a close-up photo of a monarch egg.)
Real-world connection: Just like a cake recipe has steps you CANNOT skip (you can't frost a cake before you bake it!), a butterfly has life stages it cannot skip either.
Your group has 4 picture cards showing stages of a monarch butterfly's life. Sort them into the order you think is correct. Then open the Recipe Clue Cards one at a time and adjust your sequence.
Recipe Clue Cards:
• Ingredient 1: 'I am tiny, round, and laid on a leaf. I am the very beginning.'
• Ingredient 2: 'I eat and eat and eat. I grow so big my skin splits — THREE times!'
• Ingredient 3: 'I look like I am sleeping, but BIG changes are happening inside me.'
• Ingredient 4: 'I have wings! I can fly! I will lay eggs to start the recipe again.'
In your journal, sketch the 4 cards in order and draw arrows connecting them in a CIRCLE.
