Learning Objective

Students will construct and interpret picture graphs (with scaled keys up to ), bar graphs (with scaled axes), and line plots (from raw measurement data), and solve 'how many more / fewer' and 'total' comparison problems directly from graphical displays.

Lesson Overview

Students progress from reading single-unit picture graphs to constructing scaled bar graphs and line plots, building toward mystery data reconstruction — all through collaborative vertical whiteboard work in random groups.

Materials

  • Vertical whiteboards or large chart paper (one per group)
  • Dry-erase markers (one per group)
  • Erasers or paper towels
  • Random grouping cards (playing cards or popsicle sticks)
  • Rulers (one per student, for Slice 4)
  • Printed anchor reference cards: 'Check the Key / Check the Scale' reminder strip
  • Teacher projection display for warm-up and Desmos interactive
