Data Detectives: Reading and Building Graphs at the Wildlife Sanctuary

Students will construct and interpret picture graphs (with scaled keys up to ), bar graphs (single- and multi-unit scales), and line plots (whole-unit measurement data), and will solve 'how many more / fewer' and 'total' problems directly from graphical displays.
Lesson Overview
Students progress from reading a simple picture graph with a 1-to-1 key to constructing and interpreting scaled picture graphs, bar graphs with between-gridline values, and line plots — solving comparison and total problems throughout. The wildlife sanctuary framing gives every graph a meaningful real-world purpose.
Materials
- Vertical non-permanent surfaces (whiteboards or chart paper)
- Dry-erase markers (1 per group)
- Random group generator (cards, sticks, or app)
- Sticky notes (for gallery walk annotations)
- Printed 'Data Detective Badge' half-sheet (optional engagement prop)
- Rulers (for Line Plot tasks)
