From Skin to Brain: How Your Body Detects and Responds to the World

Students will develop and use models to trace the pathway of sensory information from receptors through nerves to the brain, analyze reaction time data across sensory types, and construct evidence-based explanations of how the nervous system enables protective responses — aligned to 4-LS1-2 and 4-LS1-1.
Lesson Overview
Students investigate how sense receptors detect stimuli and send signals through nerves to the brain for processing, using a ruler-drop reaction time activity and pathway mapping to build toward understanding how prosthetic nerve sensors and autonomous car collision detection mimic biological systems.
Materials
- Rulers (one per pair of students)
- Data recording sheets
- Colored pencils (red, blue, yellow)
- Body outline diagrams (printed)
- Index cards for card sort
- Blindfolds or sleep masks
- Small bell or clicker (for auditory trigger trials)
- Sticky notes
- Anchor phenomenon image (printed or projected)
- Vocabulary card sets (printed)
Scaffolded Task Progression
Using the body outline diagram provided, draw and label the complete pathway of a sensory signal when someone touches a hot stove burner. Use RED for the signal traveling TO the brain and BLUE for the response signal traveling FROM the brain to the muscles.
Label each stop on the pathway:
- Sense receptor (skin)
- Sensory nerve
- Spinal cord
- Brain (processing center)
- Motor nerve
- Muscle (response)
Write one sentence describing what happens at each labeled stop.
Engineers designing a prosthetic hand need to copy the pathway you just mapped. Look at the diagram below showing a bionic hand sensor system.
