Students will be able to identify and explain how internal and external structures of plants and animals support survival functions (protection, support, nutrient transport, reproduction), and connect these structures to real-world biomimicry engineering designs.
Lesson Overview
Students explore how internal and external structures of plants and animals serve specific survival functions, connecting to biomimicry engineering through examples like Velcro (inspired by plant burrs) and waterproof coats (inspired by lotus leaves).
Materials
- Photos of a cactus stem and a bird skeleton (printed or projected)
- Structure sorting cards (printed and cut — see cardSets)
- Real or plastic plant samples (cactus, leaf with waxy coating, dandelion with seeds)
- Magnifying lenses (1 per pair)
- Velcro strip samples (1 per group)
- Lotus leaf or waterproof jacket fabric samples
- Burr/seed pods (burdock or similar)
- Sticky notes (2 colors per student)
- Student science notebooks
- Pencils and colored pencils
- Anchor chart paper and markers
- Printed Four-Quadrant note sheets (1 per student)
